Tooth Enamel is the hardest tissue found in our body. Dentin, which is found under the Enamel is not as hard as Enamel. The large surface of the tooth is covered by enamel. It is basically in yellowish, grayish color. It is translucent and contains no cells. In composition enamel contains Ninety Five percent of the of the minerals and rest is water and other materials.
Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral of the enamel which contains mainly calcium, which gives it strength and brittleness. Two types of protein, amelogenins and enamelins are found in enamel.
Enamel prism or Enamel rod is the main part of the enamel along with the rod sheath. Ameloblasts are the cells which helps in creation of the enamel. Tooth development consists of many stages. In these stages Enamel formation is also considered as the stage(crown stage). The two major misshapenness that can occur with Enamel are
- Hypoplasia : This is occurred due to infection during development which cause lack of enamel.
- Hypocalcification : This makes enamel soft due to deficiency of calcium.
